How to properly preserve your painting(s)?

How to properly preserve your painting(s)?

Preserving a painting you've acquired from an art gallery involves maintaining the conditions it's displayed or stored in to prevent deterioration. Here's a guide on how to properly preserve your painting:

1. Initial Handling and Assessment:

  • Handle with Care: When you first bring the painting home, handle it gently by the edges of the frame or the backing board if unframed. Avoid touching the painted surface directly, as oils from your skin can cause damage over time. Consider wearing cotton gloves.

2. Choosing the Right Display Location:

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: This is the most crucial factor. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from direct sunlight can cause fading of colors, weakening of the canvas, and other forms of degradation over time. Choose a location where the painting will not be exposed to direct sunlight at any time of the day.
  • Control Temperature and Humidity: Fluctuations in temperature and humidity can damage paintings.
    • Temperature: Maintain a stable room temperature, ideally between 18-24°C (65-75°F). Avoid hanging paintings near heat sources like radiators or fireplaces, or in areas prone to extreme temperature changes.
    • Humidity: Aim for a relative humidity level between 40-50%. High humidity can lead to mold growth, warping of the canvas, and loosening of the paint. Very low humidity can cause the paint to become brittle and crack. Consider using a hygrometer to monitor the humidity levels in your home and a humidifier or dehumidifier to maintain a stable environment if necessary.
  • Good Air Circulation: Ensure good airflow around the painting to prevent moisture buildup. Avoid hanging paintings in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like bathrooms or kitchens where steam and grease can accumulate.
  • Keep Away from Pollutants: Smoke, dust, and other airborne pollutants can settle on the painting's surface and be difficult to remove. Avoid displaying paintings in areas with heavy dust or smoke.

3. Framing and Glazing:

  • Consider Professional Framing: If the painting is unframed, consider having it professionally framed using archival-quality materials. This will provide physical protection and can also include UV-protective glazing.
  • UV-Protective Glazing: For framed paintings, especially those on paper (like watercolors or prints) or those you want to be extra careful with, consider using UV-protective glass or acrylic. This glazing filters out harmful UV rays, significantly reducing the risk of fading. Ensure there's a gap between the glazing and the painting's surface using a mat or spacers to prevent sticking, especially in humid conditions.
  • Acid-Free Materials: Ensure all framing materials that come into contact with the artwork (mat boards, backing boards, tapes) are acid-free to prevent chemical damage over time.

4. Cleaning and Maintenance:

  • Dust Regularly: Gently dust the surface of the painting and the frame with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth or a soft brush (like a sable brush). For textured paintings, use a soft brush to get into crevices, being careful not to dislodge any paint.
  • Avoid Liquids and Harsh Cleaners: Never use water, cleaning solutions, or solvents on the painted surface unless specifically advised by a professional art conservator. These can damage the paint layers.
  • Don't Touch the Surface: As mentioned before, avoid touching the painted surface with your bare hands.
  • Professional Cleaning: If the painting requires more thorough cleaning due to accumulated grime or other issues, consult a professional art conservator. Attempting to clean it yourself could cause irreversible damage.

5. Long-Term Storage (if applicable):

If you need to store the painting for an extended period:

  • Wrap Carefully: Wrap the painting in acid-free paper or glassine paper first, then add a layer of bubble wrap for cushioning. Ensure it can "breathe" slightly; don't seal it airtight in plastic.
  • Use Appropriate Boxes: Store the wrapped painting in a sturdy, appropriately sized box. Fill any empty space with packing material to prevent movement.
  • Store in a Stable Environment: Choose a cool, dry, and dark storage location with stable temperature and humidity, avoiding attics, basements, or garages.

By following these guidelines, you can significantly increase the lifespan and maintain the condition of your painting for years to come. Remember that different types of paintings (oil, acrylic, watercolor, etc.) might have slightly different specific needs, so if you have any doubts, it's always best to consult with us or a professional art conservator.
