Chan Kai’s biography
Established Chinese ink artist Chan Kai was born in Guangdong in 1956 and relocated to Hong Kong in 1979. Chan is currently the member of Overseas Chinese Artists Association and China Female Artists Association, vice-chairperson of the Chinese Art Academy Research Society, senior fellow of Buddhist Culture and Art Center of China, art consultant of Guangdong Provincial Lingdong Museum of Arts, and founding member of The Hong Kong Artists Association.
Chan had a strong interest in painting since young and her passion was further enlightened after learning ink art with Liu Haisu, an iconic Chinese ink master. She then always co-creating with legendary artists including Li Keran, Chang Shifa, Zhu Qizhan, Guan Liang, Chao Shao-an, Huang Huanwu, and Li Xiongcai. From these precious encounters, she was deeply inspired by these giant artists and gradually developed her own style in painting. Her unique way of portraying flowers and natural landscapes is achieved by her bold yet moderately controlled brushwork, and the playful combination of ink and vibrant colors. In recent years her style has been reborn in traditional Chinese paintings, moving towards the field of abstraction and impressionism, her art works are uniquely different.
Apart from being a well-recognized ink artist, Chan Kai is also a Chinese poet. A lot of similarities can be found between her painting and writing style and content – they are both bold, strong, yet fluid and tender for example. It would be even more enjoyable to see her artworks through with her poetry.
Chan had numerous exhibitions internationally in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, and Japan. Her works have been collected by various galleries, museums, and private collectors worldwide.
